Does a Room Need a Closet to be Considered a Bedroom in Missouri?

Today on the #HeyBob show we have a question that may seem simple, but can turn complicated quickly depending on who you ask! Mortgage lenders, appraisers, municipalities, local real estate associations, and home buyers & sellers can all have a number of opinions on this. Here’s the best answer I can give on whether or not a room needs a closet to be considered a bedroom in Missouri.

Does a room need a closet to be considered a bedroom in Missouri?

You will get many different answers to this question and they will vary depending on where you are in the country. In St. Louis and the rest of Missouri, having a closet is a must for a room to be considered a bedroom. The only exception is for historical homes because closets were not common in those times.

Other factors that determine whether a room is a bedroom in Missouri.

  • The room must be of adequate size
  • The ceiling must be a certain height
  • There must be two points of exit
  • The room must be up to code with the local municipality
